Starlink launches in government-held Yemen; Houthi authorities declare it illegal
What he said or did
Musk announced on X that Starlink was available in Yemen under a licence from the internationally recognised government, which controls the south.
Background
The government signed a five-year licensing agreement with Starlink in January 2024. The Houthis control Sanaa and much of the north.
Official response
The Houthi-run communications ministry called the service a direct threat to Yemeni national security
and warned citizens against dealing with Starlink, describing it as illegal (Defense Mirror, citing Al-Masirah); Houthi official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti called the launch part of America's broader conflict with Yemen.
