Twitter suspends journalists from CNN, NYT and Washington Post who covered jet-tracking ban; UN and EU object

…doxxing my real-time location and endangering my family is not
Elon Musk · 15 Dec 2022

What he said or did

Twitter suspended the accounts of several reporters, including CNN's Donie O'Sullivan, The New York Times' Ryan Mac, The Washington Post's Drew Harwell and The Intercept's Micah Lee, after coverage of the @elonjet ban. Musk wrote that doxxing my real-time location and endangering my family is not acceptable.

Background

Twitter's trust and safety head told NPR that sharing real-time location information broke its policy and that no exception was made for journalists.

Official response

A spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the suspensions a dangerous precedent. EU Commissioner Věra Jourová warned of possible sanctions under EU law, saying There are red lines. And sanctions, soon.

What happened next

After a Twitter poll in which about 59% of 3.69 million votes chose immediate reinstatement, Musk said on 16 December that the suspensions would be lifted, and several accounts were restored.
