Twitter restricts some content in Turkey before presidential election; Musk defends decision

What he said or did

Two days before Turkey's 14 May election, Twitter said it had taken action to restrict access to some content in Turkey, without naming the content. Musk defended it: The choice is have Twitter throttled in its entirety or limit access to some tweets.

Background

Turkey's government had blocked Twitter several times before, including after the February 2023 earthquake. Critics said the platform had complied with a government request to limit opposition content.

Official response

Human Rights Watch urged platforms to be more transparent, saying the election's integrity depended on accessible platforms. Musk said Twitter could post what the Turkish government had sent.
