Musk says he is activating Starlink for Iran after US eases sanctions during protests
What he said or did
Musk said SpaceX would activate Starlink in response to Secretary of State Antony Blinken's announcement of a general licence expanding internet services available to Iranians. In December 2022 he wrote: Approaching 100 Starlinks active in Iran.
Background
The move came during nationwide protests in Iran, as authorities curbed access to social media including Instagram and WhatsApp (NetBlocks via Al Jazeera). Starlink was not licensed to operate in Iran.
Official response
President Ebrahim Raisi said Iran must deal decisively with those who oppose the country's security and tranquility
(state media via Al Jazeera).
