X challenges India's content-blocking process and Sahyog portal in Karnataka High Court
What he said or did
X Corp filed a writ petition arguing that the government's use of Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act created an unlawful parallel blocking system bypassing Section 69A, and called the Sahyog portal a censorship tool.
Background
The Sahyog portal, run by the Home Ministry's Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, lets many officials send takedown requests; X had refused to appoint staff to it.
Official response
The government argued Section 79(3)(b) is valid, that safe harbour is conditional on acting on notices, and that as a US company X cannot invoke Article 19 free speech rights.
What happened next
On 24 September 2025 the Karnataka High Court dismissed the petition and upheld the Sahyog portal, saying social media cannot be left in a state of anarchic freedom.
X said it was deeply concerned
and would appeal.
